1) Your notification of returning to your country 転出届

If you do not properly complete your notification of returning to your country, then despite not living in Japan, you will still be responsible to pay for the Japanese Health Insurance and possibly for the Japanese Pension. When you submit your notification, you will simultaneously be withdrawn from the Japanese Health Care and Pension Systems.

In order to submit your notification, please report to the City Hall of the area you live in`s service window (For example, those living in the International Dorm need to go to the Oono-kita branch listed below) within 14 days of when you plan to leave Japan in order to report your intent to return to your country.

2) How to deal with your Resident Card 在留(ざいりゅう)カードの取り扱いについて

The card itself will be voided at the airport by an immigration officer so you can take it home as souvenir if you wish.

3) Mobile phone 携帯電話の解約(けいたいでんわのかいやく)

You can cancel your service at any official AU/Docomo/Softbank shops or at the location where you originally purchased your service unless you were instructed otherwise beforehand. Those who have a pre-paid service will not have to cancel it.

4) Library books  図書館(としょかん)の本を返却(へんきゃく)しましょう

Please make sure to return all of the books that you borrowed to the library.

5) Bank Account

Once you have officially notified Japan of your intent to leave the country (in step 1 above), you will no longer be an official resident of Japan. Those who are no longer official residents of Japan are legally not allowed to open or maintain bank accounts within the country. As this is the case, we highly recommend cancelling your Japanese bank account before physically returning to your home country.

6) Pay for your National Health Insurance (or receive a refund if you overpaid it)
